Personality; At a glance, there are quite a few things that could be said about Caius Ballad. His mysterious appearance, clothes that seem to don't belong to any time period, do nothing to soften his imposing and intimidating demeanor. Unreadable is his expression, and trying to figure out what he's actually thinking can be an impossibility. However, that suits him just fine. He is a man of few words, the type to not waste his breath on trying to pad his words or intentions. Caius is concise, blunt, and clear in his speech. Although he is often cryptic in his words, what he speaks is always the truth. Given how little he can say to begin with, that makes each and every word that much more important.
In battle, he is just the same. Saying he is forward in his approach is an understatement; when facing an enemy, he is absolutely relentless. Due to the immense power he has, such a relentless streak is the same as being utterly ruthless. Summoning hoards of monsters, casting down meteors, even just wielding his massive sword in midair with ease--those are things he can do that are just the tip of the iceberg. Of course, such a monstrous method of fighting seems fitting for a villain seeking to destroy everything. At least, that is how he appears at first: a mad man who would stop at nothing to achieve his goal, even if it meant the destruction and ruin of everything. He has manipulated countless people, changed the very course of history for the worse, and likely ruined countless lives for his goal.
However, that is not to say that Caius is truly heartless. It was the cruelty of his own fate that drove him to such actions. Once a devoted Guardian of the seeress Yeul, an act that should have ended his own life instead granted him immortality, and thus the ability to protect Yeul throughout the ages. Unfortunately, what that meant was constantly seeing the young girl die over and over again, her life always cut short by the burden of the futures she had to see. That was why he sought the death of the Goddess Etro, the destruction of the world; only by killing her and rendering the world into a timeless void could Yeul be saved from her fate of seeing the future only to die. Even when questioned whether such actions would truly make her happy, he has only one reply: Caius does not want to make Yeul happy. He wants to save her. Being so entirely driven by the goal, even her happiness is secondary to her being saved.
While his true goal ultimately directed every part of his long-lived life, it was not impossible for him to actually form relationships with other people. Caius was the mentor of Noel Kreiss, and the young boy looked up to him and admired him greatly. What he wished for was that both he and Caius could protect Yeul as Guardians together. However, what Noel did not have was the conviction and will to kill Caius to become the next Guardian, that being the only thing that could kill Etro as his heart and secret to immortality was actually her own. Disappointed with him, Caius left for Valhalla in order to find a way to bring the chaos of that world into the regular reality. He abandoned both his only companion and the current Yeul for the sake of finding a way to save the seeress. His own life meant nothing if that was what it took to truly save her.
